The Perfect Athlete

Shane Perkins

Shane at the UCI Track World Championships

In this amazing short film, Kirk Docker deconstructs the machine that is Shane Perkins, Australia’s fastest track cyclist. I highly recommend that you take 4 minutes to watch this! Docker does a great job of putting into perspective the amount of energy an elite athlete like Perko puts into their training regimen (outstanding visuals and graphics by Duncan Elms).

Golden Girls of London 2012

US Gymnastics Team

This Olympics was a historic one in many ways. Oscar Pistorious became the first double amputee to race in an event, Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time, and Usain Bolt won both the 100m and the 200m for the second consecutive time. However, a lion’s share of the Olympic glory belongs to the women. The U.S. women scored two-thirds of the gold medals for the United States. If not for the women, Team USA would have finished 5th in the overall country count and 3rd in the gold medal count.

On Sunday, the much anticipated Olympic Men’s Basketball competition began. And, as anyone would naturally expect, the Americans are above and beyond the competition’s most popular story. That being said, I thought I’d make it my responsibility to cover all other international matchups at this year’s Olympic Games as a way of making sure that U.S. basketball fans remain “cultured” about their foreign competitors and how they are performing in pool play.

One More Moment of Glory

As the Olympic Opening Ceremonies are only hours away, there has been speculation for months to see who will light the Olympic flame in London. Several famed British personas have carried the flame so far including Rupert Grint from Harry Potter, the boy band the Wanted and Andy Murray. Of all of the famed British athletes like Beckham being considered, I am hoping to see a lesser known athlete to Americans but one of the greatest athletes of all time. Sir Steve Redgrave of Great Britain won 5 Olympic gold medals in 5 different Olympics for rowing.

There’s no question as to what Coach Mike Krzyzewski is capable of achieving at the college level. As the all-time winningest head coach in Men’s Division I basketball history with a record of 927-291, it’d be hard to make an argument that the man doesn’t know what he’s doing on the sidelines. He has led the Duke Blue Devils to four NCAA Championships (1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010), 13 ACC Tournament championships, and 11 Final Four appearances. Oh yeah, he’s also received 12 National Coach of the Year honors.

What would you do for an opportunity to train with your dream coach for a shot at success? For 2012 Olympic gymnast Gabrielle Douglas, the answer was clear: move one thousand miles from home. Douglas was a phenomenal gymnast in her home town of Virginia Beach, VA where she had lived her whole life. Although the coaching at her gym, Excalibur Gymnastics, was great, Douglas faced a tough decision at the young age of 14: stay at home with her family and friends, or receive even better coaching in order to chase international gymnastic dreams. Douglas chose to move away from her family to train with renowned coach Liang Chow in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Our colleagues in internet over at Opinion.is pose a thoughtful question: is all of the Olympic hype overblown, thinly veiled political posturing? It seems obvious that the answer is yes – the international sentiment on how to resolve, say, the European debt crisis isn’t likely to change because Greece and Germany have a hard-fought, good-spirited water polo match in London. This seems plain enough.

As we all know, the competitive climate within today’s sports world has run rampant, and, as a result, athletes of all levels are seeking any advantage they can possibly gain. But aside from the physical training aspect of making yourself into the stud athlete you have always dreamt of one day becoming, what is it that actually separates the so called “good” from the “great”? And the answer to that question, my friends, lies in recovery: the quicker you can recover, the faster you can improve.

Jamaican sprint phenomenon Usain Bolt told CNN that he can beat his previous world record in the 100 meter sprint, which he set in Berlin with the astounding time of 9.58 seconds.  The 25-year-old, who many regard as the Michael Jordan of Track & Field, is confident he can become the first man to break 9.4 seconds in London this August.  While talking to a CNN Olympic Contributor, Bolt said, “Everybody has been talking about this 9.4 all season. If it’s possible, I’ll be the one to run 9.4 seconds.”

Many believe that Bolt is capable of smashing the 9.4 barrier for the following reasons:
